If you have Type 2 Diabetes, it is extremely important to incorporate regular exercise into your health & wellness plan. In addition to a healthy, balanced meal plan and the appropriate medications, exercise can make big changes in your overall health. By maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle, it will be easier to keep your glucose levels within the desired range, and you will be less likely to experience long-term complications that can be associated with Diabetes.
When you exercise, it helps your body to control your blood glucose levels. According to endocrineweb.com “People with type 2 diabetes have too much glucose in their blood, either because their body doesn’t produce enough insulin to process it, or because their body doesn’t use insulin properly (insulin resistant).
In either case, exercise can reduce the glucose in your blood. Muscles can use glucose without insulin when you’re exercising. In other words, it doesn’t matter if you’re insulin resistant or if you don’t have enough insulin: when you exercise, your muscles get the glucose they need, and in turn, your blood glucose level goes down.
If you’re insulin resistant, exercise actually makes your insulin more effective. That is—your insulin resistance goes down when you exercise, and your cells can use the glucose more effectively.”
What Types Of Exercise Should I Be Doing?
Aerobic Exercises: You should be getting at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least 5 days a week. It doesn’t have to be all in one chunk of time, you can space it out into 3 blocks of ten minutes each day, or whatever works best for you. Some examples of aerobic exercise include: walking, taking the stairs, jogging/running, dancing/Zumba, tennis, swimming, biking, hiking. Try to find active things you enjoy that will also get your heart pumping!
Flexibility Training: Ensuring you properly stretch before and after a workout is very important. It helps to maintain the health of your joints and helps you to avoid being overly sore. It also helps to ensure that you maintain evenness in your body. Yoga or a stretching class is a great way to encourage flexibility in your body.
Strength Training: Set a goal to do some type of strength training 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes. Lifting weights or other exercises that utilize your body’s own weight are a great way to incorporate strength training into your routine. Remember it’s OK to start slow. You can ease into a regular weight training program that will help you to build your muscles, which will help to better manage your blood glucose levels.
If you have not been regularly exercising, please check with your Doctor before beginning any kind of fitness regimen. You want to ensure that you ease into a program to avoid injuries or further health complications. Just remember, one step at a time, and you will get there!
