Incorporating a variety of different activities into your lifestyle is important to help keep your body fit and strong. Choosing the correct shoe for each of your activities is an important part of setting yourself up for success and giving your body the support it needs. Different movements require different types of support in different areas, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for in a shoe when engaging in an activity.
Trail Running Shoes
Rugged terrain and unexpected conditions make trail running an adventurous experience, but also mean that you need to be sure to wear the proper footwear when heading out on the trail. If most of your runs will be on soft, muddy surfaces, you want to look for a longer “lug” length (the individual threads of the shoe) to help prevent slips and slides. For runs primarily on hard pack or rocky terrain, a shorter lug length works well, as it will give you more stability/traction on a hard surface.
Be cautious about choosing waterproof shoes. Their waterproof membranes mean highly reduced breathability, which could cause excess moisture build up inside your shoe, leading to blisters. Unless you plan to be running regularly in muddy or snowy trails, it’s best to avoid waterproof shoes.
Cross-training is a term that generally incorporates a variety of athletic activities that don’t sport specific. Most cardio based exercise, including the treadmill, elliptical m Zumba, kickboxing etc fall into the cross-training category.
When choosing a cross-training shoe you want to ensure you choose a shoe that supports both vertical and lateral movement, so your foot will be properly supported during your workouts.
Your cross-training shoes should provide support for your foot and ankle during side to side movements, along with adequate traction to help avoids slipping. Your shoes should fit snugly so your foot won’t slide around inside your shoes, but be sure to leave adequate space in the front of your shoe (about a thumb’s width) to avoid damage to your toes and toenails from repeated impact.
Road Running Shoes
While road running shoes may LOOK like all other sneakers, it’s important to ensure that the shoes you choose for running offer your feet the support and features they need for the repetitive motion distance running involves. When choosing a shoe, you should consider size gender, arch type, mileage and cushioning.
You want to ensure the shoe you choose is lightweight enough for your needs, but that it also offers adequate support. You may even want to consider using a more cushioned shoe on your rest/short run days, and a lower profile shoe for those days you plan on doing long distance runs.
Remember that as you run, your feet will swell, so it may be necessary to size up 1/2 to full size, depending on the length of your runs. I highly recommend visiting a running store for gait evaluation and for help getting properly fitted for running shoes.

Why having this 3 to 1 combination last is so important in creating that perfect fit for all our ladies. What does 3 to 1 combination mean? The heel counter is 3 times narrow than the ball width of the shoe. Okay, big deal? Well, this is a critical factor because a women heel structure is a great deal narrow than a Men’s and if we made all our Ladies footwear as the same last of a Men’s style- the ladies heels would slipping all day long or have a terrible fit!
