5 Foot Care Steps to Keep You Mobile & Fit
Our feet bear the brunt of all the daily activities our bodies endure. Mainly, they must support us and keep us balanced while under a lot of pressure. Plus, being they are not within easy reach, it’s easy to ignore them – until pain strikes; then it’s impossible to forget them! Being mindful to care for your feet pays in multiples.
As we age, chronic foot pain and common foot problems (such as tendinitis, bunions, and arthritis) can increasingly limit mobility.
Taking a few simple steps to care for your feet can help you feel good and not lose your freedom walk, run and keep moving at your own pace.
1. Keep extra weight off.
As you can imagine, the more extra pounds you have to carry around, the more force is being exerted on your feet with each step. It can also increase your risk of developing a chronic foot condition like arthritis in the feet and worsen pain from other foot problems. Being overweight can also harm foot health by putting you at higher risk for diabetes or poor blood circulation, which can lead to foot pain and loss of sensation in the feet.
2. Wear well designed, comfortable shoes.
Over a lifetime you will wear many shoes with varying styles, but the best preventative measure against pain and losing mobility is to wear shoes with comfort and good support. Wearing narrow shoes or high heels once an in while won’t cause lasting damage. However, when you are going to be on your feet a lot it’s wise to choose comfortable shoes. Also, be sure to get well-fitting exercise shoes for high-impact activities. For great options in healthy yet fashionable footwear go to www.dtfoowear.com

3. Use a quality daily moisturizer.
As we age the skin on our feet becomes thinner and dryer, in addition to developing calluses that can crack and cause pain. Apply a good quality moisturizer to your feet after showering or bathing to help keep your skin supple. Keep the areas between your toes dry however in order to avoid too much moisture to build up and bring on possible infection or fungus.
4. Inspect and clean feet well.
It’s hard to reach your feet, but be sure to thoroughly wash and dry your feet when you shower or bathe. Trim toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails. Pumice stone is a great easily found tool to gently remove calluses. Your nails are vital too, so if you wear polish take a few days after you remove it to allow them to “breathe.”
5. Massage and stretch feet often.
Take time each day to give your feet a rub down. This helps with circulation and stimulates the sensitive nerves of your feet which is also a nice relieving way to relax. Toe and midfoot arch stretch aid in keeping your muscles, ligaments, and tendons loose which can aid in avoiding tightness and pain later on. Also, stretching your Achilles tendon is also beneficial.
